Ottawa – the capital city did not disappoint us in terms of scenic beauty or magnificent architectural views and neither for food. We had some satisfying and flavorful meals in the downtown. After a tiring and satisfying day in Ottawa, it was time to satisfy our gastronomic desires. We were craving for Indian food since we didn’t have it for 4 days of the trip. Our search narrowed down to ‘East India Company’. The name sounded interesting, and we thought to try it. Walking our way down the blocks, we entered to a place full of beautiful Indian artwork and aromatic food.
East India Company is a family owned upscale Indian restaurant serving two locations in Ottawa for over 30 years.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner buffets daily that includes a wide-spread of salad, vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and dessert. The fascinating part of the buffet was the variety of chutneys and pickles.
The salad bar included plain yogurt, raita, fresh garden salad variety, potato and peas salad, chickpeas salad, poppadum to name a few.
There were quite a few vegetarian options unlike other places – mini samosas, mushroom masala, navratan korma, dal, Punjabi kadhi, spinach paneer, okra.
For non-veg lovers, there was – tandoori chicken, butter chicken, lamb, beef curry, mussels curry. Tawa chicken, getting simmered over a huge griddle seemed popular choice. The curries could be enjoyed with white rice or biryani.
Lined around the griddle were ample variety of pickles, chutneys, ghee/ oil tempering for extra flavors. Apart from the common ones (mint chutney, tamarind chutney, mango chutney, coconut chutney, mango pickle) were that caught our interest. To name a few – cucumber chutney, radish in vinegar, ginger pickle. We tried quite a lot of them and found them delicious. I could see non-Indians getting fascinated with this immense variety and trying out many varieties.
We sat outside in patio to savor our food. The food was flavorful and non-spicy. We were happy to see our kids enjoying the non-spicy meal.
After indulging in the hearty meal was time for yummy desserts. Under the wall lined with elegant pieces of Indian deities, were the sweet treats. Hard not to get tempted by Moong dal halwa, kheer, jalebi, mango mousse, cookies and gulab jamun. We loved the gulab jamun and especially the luscious moong dal halwa.
The restaurant seemed very popular as it was packed and people even didn’t mind waiting for their turn. The service was fast and good. We could see people sitting and relishing their food.
For kids, do remember your age as the buffet prices for them are Age + $0.95. Just curious, will the expecting moms be paying $0.95?? Just kidding…
The only drawback was that bread like Naan was not included in the buffet and you had to order them separately.
We have talked a lot about food, but I cannot leave without mentioning about the beautiful ethnic artwork and decor of the restaurant. It adds to the charm of the place.
