When you arrive in Santorini, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world.
With white houses studded on the cliffs, blue-roofed churches, and panoramic views over a shimmering caldera, Santorini is probably the most beautiful of all the Greek Islands.
A volcanic island, much of the coastline is rocky, which adds to the dramatic scenery. If you’re traveling as a family, be sure to explore the different colored beaches – white, pink, or black – and see the stark, rugged coastline in all its glory.
Visit the small, white village of Pyrgos, walk through the charming, pebbled streets, and gaze out at the ocean from a church rooftop. Dedicate one evening of your stay to walking along the cliff from Fira to Oia.
It’s an especially stunning walk at sunset and early evening when you can see the sun dip into the ocean and the lights of the city twinkling against the clifftops.
Where to Stay in Santorini: Santorini is one of those places where it’s worth splurging a little on accommodation, especially since prices can be very reasonable in the shoulder season. Be sure to pick somewhere with a sea view and, if you’re on a budget, consider staying in Fira or even Pyrgos. For a luxury stay, book Katikies Kirini Santorini, a beautiful cave hotel in Oia, with sweeping views of the caldera. Just down the road from Katikies Krini, you’ll find the lovely Roka restaurant, tucked into a small street in Oia and perfect for a romantic dinner. The food is Greek, with a fine dining twist. Try the handmade pasta or slow-cooked veal – you won’t be disappointed.
2. Crete, Greece

One of my favorite islands in the Mediterranean is Crete, the fifth-largest Mediterranean island and the largest island in Greece.
The island has three great towns to stay in, along with a variety of charming small towns to choose from as well. You can spend your time in Crete based in Heraklion or Chania and use them as a base to explore, or you can stay in a few different cities. It really depends on how long you’ll be here.
The island is full of gorgeous lighthouses, stunning Cretan beaches, and stunning vistas. And while the island isn’t as popular in winter, it still makes for a fabulous island getaway.
While in Crete, take advantage of the local Cretan cuisine and how it differs from traditional Greek food. Traditional food from Crete includes dakos, snails, and copious amounts of olive oil.
And of course, don’t forget the wine! Wine grown and produced at local Cretan vineyards is both high quality and abundant. Always ask your server for pairing recommendations as they tend to know their menu and wine selection in detail.
Finally, don’t skip a visit to Seitan Limania, one of Crete’s (and Greece’s) best-kept secrets. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe!

3. Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is world-famous for its party scene, stunning sunsets, and most of all its stunning beaches. It is part of the Cyclades islands and it has its own international flights as well as established ferry links from other islands as well as mainland Greece.
Mykonos is not a cheap island and if you wish to visit, you must plan things in advance, even a hostel here will cost you upwards of €40-50 per night. There’s also a distinct lack of taxis here and quad bikes rule here. Mykonos is one of the best party islands in Europe owing to its world-class party scene.
The best part, however, is the beautiful beaches of Mykonos. There are more than 40 beaches one more beautiful than the last. The beaches in the north and east are more secluded and perfect for a great time with families. South has the busiest and most fun beaches.
The whitewash houses of Chira are hustling with life in the evenings and walking around in the flower-laden streets in the evening is really soothing.
The sunsets here are spectacular and sitting by the windmills watching the sky changing thousands of shades of orange and red is an utter privilege. Mykonos is one of the most beautiful islands in Europe and has something to offer everyone.

4. Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes is one of the largest – and most popular – Greek islands. With the old town, beautiful beaches, and the whitewashed village of Lindos to explore, it’s not hard to see why.
I would head straight to Rhodes Old Town, which is the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe.
Wander around the narrow, pebbled streets, stop off at an outdoor café to enjoy some moussaka, and explore the magnificent Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights. If you don’t get lost at least once then you’re not doing it right!
Outside of the old town, it’s worth going for a wander to find the ancient Olympic Stadium. It may be a little tricky to find, but it’s pretty cool to see when you do get there.
Lindos is also a must-visit destination in Rhodes. It’s a gorgeous whitewashed village and is a real pocketful of charm.
Expect narrow winding streets, cute souvenir shops, and rooftop restaurants that are the perfect spot to enjoy some traditional Greek food.
If you can muster up the energy in the heat then making the walk up to the Acropolis is well worth it for the incredible views of Saint Paul’s Bay and the greeny-blue ocean below.
For family fun, head down to the nearby beach to cool off in the sea after all that exertion!

Greece is a popular destination for couples and families, it is home to the best and most beautiful islands in Europe.
When you think of Greece, you immediately think of the popular islands like Crete, Santorini, Kos, or Rodos. But the relatively small island Zakynthos (410 km²) is a magical destination for a sunny family vacation that should be high on your Greece bucket list.
Rent a boat and get amazed by the crystal blue waters, visit the blue caves, and take the time to go snorkeling among sea turtles.

One of the most beautiful and best islands to visit in Europe is the Isle of Capri off the coast of Naples in southern Italy.
This magical island can only be reached by boat, and regularly scheduled ferries depart daily from Naples, Sorrento, and Positano.
From Spring into early Fall, tourists flock to Capri on day trips. But it deserves much more than one day.
Although Capri is known for high-end shopping, amazing restaurants, and historic sites, there are also activities for the whole family to enjoy. Great beaches can be found around the island and some are close to the harbor.
The best way to get on the water is on a boat tour that will take you around the island and even swimming in the clear blue water. One of the most popular things to do on Capri for families is a tour of the spectacular Blue Grotto. It’s an adventure for everyone.
Where to Stay in Capri: Spend the night at La Minerva, a boutique hotel with stunning views and a sun-drenched terrace you’ll never want to leave. Staying over will allow you to take advantage of the wonderful casual restaurants around the main square, Piazza Umberto after the crowds have left. After dinner, a stroll through the narrow lanes with the scent of flowers and the sound of the sea is sure to make you fall in love with Capri. There’s no place like it!
7. Sicily, Italy

Although the Italian island Sicily is mainly known for its Mafiosi, as shown in the many movies situated on the island, it’s also the island of hot weather, delicious food, ancient culture, and wonderful landscapes.
Plus, the smaller islands around Sicily are also magnificent diving spots!
The capital city of this island, Palermo, is everything you can expect from a laid-back historical Italian city.
One of the top visits in Palermo is the catacombs of the Capuchin Abbey, although seeing these skeletons is not for the faint of heart.
If you’re looking to see something beyond the Cathedral and Palatine Chapel, a fun activity to do with kids is visiting the Puppet Theatre of Palermo! I would also recommend booking a room in one of the many boutique hotels in the city.
Another place you definitely can’t miss when visiting the island is Taormina, an ancient Greek city (which later turned Roman) on the other side of the island. There you should definitely visit the ancient amphitheater, which is one of the best-preserved theatres in Italy!
If you want to visit the whole island, I highly recommend renting a car and driving your way around!
Where to Stay in Sicily: I also recommend staying in Hotel Villa Sonia just outside Taormina. Nearby you can visit the most iconic landmark of Sicily, the Etna volcano, which you can climb all the way to the top yourself (at a safe distance from any eruptions). This is also a perfect activity to do with slightly older kids.
8. Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is the perfect place if you are looking for a seaside and mountain experience on one island.
Sardinia is a large Mediterranean Sea island with excellent sandy beaches and lush mountains. Best of all, it is only 220 miles (354 km) from Rome, and Sardinia is easy to get to as there are four ferry routes from Rome.
Sardinia is the second-largest Italian island and is a stunning island to visit as it has 2,000 km of pristine coastline as well as a mountainous interior.
Throughout Sardinia, you will find mysterious beehive-shaped stone ruins (nuraghe) left behind from the Bronze Age, some as old as 1500 BC.
Because of its mild climate, pristine beaches, and fantastic food, Sardinia is a popular vacation spot for families holidaying in Italy.
Sardinia’s capital, Cagliari, has several beautiful beaches along a sandy coast that is easy to access from the city by bus. Poetto is a beach with a stunning setting and shallow areas for kids to play.
Other beaches worth visiting are Sant’Elia, Calamosca, and Cala Regina. Cagliari is near the well-preserved Nuraghe Su Nuraxi and the ruins of Nora, an ancient city where Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans once traded.
Another place to visit in Sardinia is the seaside city of Alghero, which has a rich Spanish heritage.
During the 14th century, the Pope gave Sardinia to the King of Aragon. Then drive the coastal road to the charming town of Bosa, which has intriguing medieval streets, an old stone bridge, colorful buildings, and Malaspina Castle.

9. Burano, Itlay

One of the most colorful islands to visit in Venice is Burano which is less than an hour’s ferry ride within the Venice archipelago.
You’ll immediately notice Burano for its colorful and pastel-colored buildings that brighten up anyone’s spirits even on a cloudy day.
Burano originally was a fishing village outside of Venice, quiet and the community kept its proud fishing industry and the production of lace which was sold in shops and markets around the Venice area.
Burano is only an island of 1,000 residents but receives over one million visitors each year to the island to explore all the colorful neighborhoods on the island.
Did you know by local law, each building has to be painted a different color? But legends point out that fishermen in town painted their homes a distinctive color so they could find their homes on the seasonal foggy nights the area is known for.
Burano is definitely colorful and a family-friendly place to explore and take some amazing pictures of the area. Definitely put Burano as a place to visit when you are exploring Venice and have time to check out the outer island areas.

10. Malta

There are three main islands – Malta, Gozo, and Comino – in the archipelago between Sicily and the North African coast. Malta has a rich history of Romans. Moors and medieval knights. It’s counted among the small islands in Europe.
Getting around to explore the island is easy with the Hop-on Hop-off buses.
M’dina is the old capital and sits on a hilltop. There are pretty pedestrianized streets, lovely architecture, and good restaurants.
Valletta is the modern capital with charming old streets and the beautiful St John’s Co-Cathedral. For the best view over the island, Barrakka Gardens is perfect.
Other fun places to include on your Malta itinerary are the Mosta Dome basilica, with marble floors, a huge dome, and a pipe organ with 2,000 pipes. Marsaxlokk is a pretty fishing village that is perfect for a seafood lunch – including Tal Qarnit which is an octopus cooked in red wine with raisins, apples, and walnuts.
On Sundays, there is a fish market too. If you have children, Popeye’s Village is a must! The waters around Malta are lovely for swimming, snorkeling, and diving and there are artificial reefs and wrecks including the destroyer, HMS Maori. There are boat trips to the other islands to enjoy too

11. Ibiza, Spain

One of the best islands in Europe is Ibiza. It is one of the Balearic Islands in Spain and it is located next to Mallorca. It is very easy to get to the island. Ibiza is of course very famous for its nightlife scene.
There are lots of clubs on the island. However, there is so much more to the island than its nightlife. It is also great to visit as a family. Ibiza is very beautiful and there are lots of great villages on the island.
Also, the old town of the island is a great place to discover. You find here many restaurants, shops, and sights!
One of the best things to see here with kids is the Castle of Ibiza. There are castle walls that you can walk on and there are beautiful viewpoints here.
Another great place in Ibiza is Es Vedra. This is a little rocky island that is very popular with visitors of the island.
Besides that, Ibiza has many beautiful beaches that are great for swimming and other water activities. One of the best of these beaches near the old town of Ibiza is Figueretas Beach, this is also a great place to listen to some songs on a beach playlist while enjoying the beach.

12. Tenerife, Spain

Tenerife, one of Europe’s best island holiday destinations, has it all. The largest of Spain’s Canary Islands boasts a year-round balmy African climate, lively beach resorts, awe-inspiring landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage.
Any Tenerife itinerary should include Its charming colonial towns, including La Laguna, La Orotava, and Garachico.
This Canary Island is also very family-friendly. Kids will love the awe-inspiring Mount Teide, the island’s most popular tourist attraction.
Alternatively, there’s Loro Parque, voted number one zoo in Europe, and Siam Parque, which is considered to be one of the world’s best water parks.
Tenerife is one the best places in Europe to go whale watching (boats depart from Puerto Colon on the southwest coast).
If museums and culture are more of your thing, visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s striking Auditorio de Tenerife or the Museo de Artesania Iberoamericana (MAIT) in La Orotava.
Where to Stay in Tenerife: For a more authentic Canarian experience, stay in Puerto de la Cruz, an unspoiled resort in the north of the island, that has retained its character. Central PENTHOUSE with TERRACE and SEA views is highly recommended. This one-bedroom apartment features an outdoor terrace that overlooks the ocean and is in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz’s charming old town.
13. Mallorca, Spain

If you’re looking for the top islands in Europe with beautiful beaches and natural wonders, you definitely have to put Mallorca on your list! Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic islands of Spain.
Mallorca is a popular summer destination but if you don’t tolerate the crowds well, try to visit in the shoulder seasons instead.
Since the island is not that big, 4 days are enough to discover the main highlights and relax on the white sandy beaches. The island is best explored by car so rent a car right after you arrive at the airport and go on a Mallorca road trip!
You can use Palma de Mallorca as a base and go for day trips from there, or you can choose to stay in different parts of the island every day – it’s completely up to you. Whichever you choose, you should definitely spend at least a day in Palma de Mallorca, the capital city of the island.
On the southeast part of Mallorca, you will find many beautiful beaches waiting to be explored. Visiting Platja de Es Trenc, Cala Pi, and Cala d’Or are a must!
Head to the western part of the island to explore the smaller villages in the mountain such as Valldemossa or Deiá.
And if you have the time, don’t forget to explore the northernmost part of the island where you can find one of the most scenic viewpoints in all of Mallorca, Cap de Formentor.

14. Lanzarote, Spain

Often considered a great sun and package holiday destination for Brits, the Canary Island of Lanzarote actually offers so much more.
Hire a Car and escape the resorts to explore a wild and barren island with secluded beaches, great surf, volcanic landscapes, and whitewashed villages to stroll.
If you’re visiting Lanzarote with kids, there are some fun waterparks to visit, but also make time to visit the volcanoes at Timanfaya with its Mars-like landscape, the lava caves of Jameos del Agua and Cuevas de Los Verdes, and the Jardin de Cactus.
A day trip to the nearby island of Isla Graciosa is also highly recommended. You can take the ferry from Órzola, which takes 25 minutes.
There are no paved roads on this island and only 700 people live here. As you step off the ferry, you feel like you’ve been transported a million miles away. Hire bikes to explore the island, or you can even hire a 4×4 with the driver on arrival.
Vegetarians and vegans will struggle to find something suitable at restaurants, so consider self-catering accommodation.
Where to Stay in Lanzarote: We recommend staying at the family-run Finca de Arrieta. This is an enclave of luxury yurts, just outside the sleepy village of Arietta, in the North of Lanzarote. This is an off-grid eco-resort running off wind and solar panels, with water fed from an underground well onsite. There are yurts for all budgets and there’s a playground, a small pool, and farm animals on site.
15. São Miguel, Azores, Portugal

Those looking for a remote destination still within the EU will find the Azores archipelago a delightful escape. The main city is Ponta Delgada on São Miguel island, which has all the comforts of a small European city without mass tourism.
It’s easy to explore São Miguel island by renting a vehicle in Ponta Delgada. Within reasonable driving time, you can explore all corners of the island.
The highlight of the trip will probably be visiting Sete Cidades and the amazing Vista do Rei viewpoint. If you’re traveling to the Azores in July, you’re in luck; the famous blue hydrangeas will be in bloom.
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, São Miguel is a great island for small hikes or large ones. For educational value, there are many small volcanic peaks, caldera lakes, and hot springs such as the ones in Furnas.
Other sites of interest are the lighthouses on the major capes, such as Farol da Ponta da Ferraria in the west and Farol do Arnel in the far east.
You can also learn about how pineapples grow at a local plantation in Ponta Delgada that’s open to the public. For culture, check out the historic core of Ponta Delgada with its buildings made of basalt rock.
Even in summer, make sure to pack rainy-day clothes for those Atlantic showers that might surprise you.

16. Madeira Island, Portugal

Portugal has risen in popularity in recent years, mostly thanks to the numerous World Travel Awards it has garnered as a top travel destination.
But, whilst most travelers holiday on mainland Portugal, only a handful have discovered the stunning island of Madeira.
Madeira is known for its incredible natural beauty, and best of all it’s only a short 2-hour flight to the island’s capital city of Funchal from Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.
Nature lovers can explore the beautiful ‘Levada’ walks and numerous hikes found on the island. The most dramatic of which, and undoubtedly one of the best hikes in Portugal is the Ponta de São Lourenço set along the easternmost tip of the island and boasting imposing cliff edges and views out over the Atlantic.
Other top things to see and explore include the Cabo Girão Skywalk that juts out 580m above the sea level, hiking up to Madeira’s highest point at Pico Ruivo, visiting the traditional village with its charming thatched roofs in Santana, discovering the tropical Monte Palace Tropical Gardens or wander through the quaint cobbled streets of old town Funchal.
For thrill-seekers, Madeira certainly does not disappoint either. Try the hair-raising 5km downhill traditional toboggan ride from Monte!
Where to Stay in Madiera: If you’re looking for the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of sightseeing, then consider booking the exquisite Savoy Palace. It’s one of the best on the island and offers an excellent location from which to discover all of Madeira’s delights!
17. Hvar, Croatia

Hvar Island is located in Croatia and it’s actually one of the most amazing islands to travel to in Europe!
Because of its immense beauty, the many lovely beaches, and its wide range of fantastic things to do, it is often named the St. Tropez of Croatia.
One of the must-sees is definitely the historic old town of Hvar with the old romantic buildings and the cobblestone streets. Here you will enjoy a unique flair like out of a travel magazine.
But not only the old town is lovely, but also the surroundings of the island are fantastic! There are so many cool things to do on Hvar Island!
Really amazing is that there are some incredibly beautiful beaches to explore, so you can spend wonderful days by the sea.
Some even say they are the best in Croatia! Interesting are also the small romantic coastal towns such as Stari Grad, Vrboska, and Jelsa. They are less touristy and so you will enjoy here the most authentic flair.
In any case, if you and your family love wine don`t miss a wine tasting in one of the many wineries on the island. Hvar is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places in Croatia and the perfect place to spend an unforgettable vacation.

18. Vis, Croatia – One of the Best Little Known European Islands
One of the remotest in Croatia and Europe, Vis Island offers a unique experience. With a wealth of historical, cultural, and natural attractions, Vis is much more beyond its beaches.
From the British, Venetians, and Ottomans to Italians and Yugoslavs, Vis has been ruled by varied rulers in the past. Visiting the ancient churches, fortresses, and museums narrates the story of its turbulent past.
You must take a Vis Military Tour to learn how the Yugoslav army used the island as their naval base.
Komiža, a rustic fishing village on the island of Vis is a delight to visit. St. Nicholas Monastery, Our Lady of the Pirates church, and Komiza Fortress are some of the must-see attractions in Komiža.
A boat tour from Komiža to Biševo is unmissable. Biševo houses one of Croatia’s unique natural wonders, the Blue Cave.
Stiniva, Srebrna, and Stončica are some of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Vis.
How can you not visit Mamma Mia locations when on the island of Vis? Yes, Vis has been a filming location for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, a famous Hollywood movie. Vis Harbor, Stiniva Bay, Barjoška Bay, Srebrna Bay, St. Jerronim church, and Barjaci are some of the best Mamma Mia locations that you must visit.

19. Rügen, Germany

Germany’s Rügen Island has dramatically high sea cliffs that are white in color. They are called the “chalk cliffs” and they are visually stunning against the backdrop of the blue sea.
If you’re into viewpoints then Rügen Island offers many of them. The most famous spot on Rugen Island is Königsstuhl, which means King’s Chair. Right a kilometer away from the Königsstuhl is another viewpoint – Victoria-Sicht.
If you visit this island with your family, make sure to rent bicycles (or carry them) so that you can explore the beauty of this island in a fun way.
The cycling/walking path covers almost the entire island from north to south. Exploring this island on foot can be fun too, especially if you want to discover the Beech Forest.
Keep in mind that the island isn’t tiny, so it may not be possible to visit more than areas of interest in one day on foot. This is why I highly recommend you to cycle here.
A big part of Rugen Island is protected under Jasmund National Park. You don’t need to pay any entry fee for the National Park, but only if you want to go to the top of Königsstuhl.

20. Sylt, Germany – One of the Best Secret Islands in Europe

Considered the Martha’s Vineyard of Europe, the island of Sylt in Northern Germany is a paradise for the rich and famous.
With pristine beaches, multiple lighthouses, Michelin restaurants, superb shopping options, and top-notch accommodations, it’s a beloved vacation spot for Germans.
The island of Sylt is especially perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as golf, swimming, surfing, sailing, and hiking!
For families, it’s an outdoor oasis from the chaos of day-to-day life. The best part is the island is easily accessible by train.
Additionally, you can navigate Sylt by bike – requiring no car for the duration of your stay. If you’re staying in the main city of Westerland, make sure to check out the Sylt Aquarium.
This aquarium gives a great overview of the wildlife found off the shores of the island.
However, make sure to not spend all of your time in Westerland – the smaller villages on the island offer a great insight into the island’s culture and history.
Due to all the sandy beaches and bike trails, Sylt is a wonderful place for a family vacation.

21. Corsica, France – One of the Most Beautiful Islands in Europe

The island of Corsica is a beach lover’s dream come true but there are many more reasons to visit. A fabulous cuisine with both French and Italian influences, forest trails, charming sleepy villages, vibrant festivals, and great weather for much of the year are just some of its main attractions.
The beaches are in general, family-friendly with gently sloping sands, perfect for paddling or building sandcastles.
Some of the busier beaches have facilities on hand, including water sports, such as sailing and kayaking, while others are more remote and never crowded.
The best way to get around is by hiring a car and a drive into the interior through the maquis-covered hillsides is a must, although the narrow winding roads can be a little hair-raising to those more used to motorways.
There’s barely a single straight road in Corsica! Alternatively, stay in one of the villages or towns with a railway station.
The train route through the mountains is one of the most spectacular in the world and visiting the hilltop villages is like stepping back in time. Corsica is pure magic.
Where to Stay in Corsica: My favorite place to stay is Résidence A Merula, in Calvi on the north of the island. It’s an enchanting collection of self-catering apartments and cottages scattered around lush green gardens with two swimming pools. It has the illusion of being in the countryside, yet the town center is just a short walk away and the beach is even nearer.
22. Iceland

One of the largest islands in Europe is not known for its pristine beaches, but rather for its incredible nature.
From chasing the Northern Lights to hiking up waterfalls, Iceland has a unique array of places to explore.
Start your journey in the capital city of Reykjavik. Three days in Reykjavik will give you plenty of time to explore this colorful city. From the Hallgrimskirkja Church to the world’s best hot dog at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, there are hidden gems on every corner of the city.
Once you’re done exploring the city, it’s time to get out and explore the countryside. Skogafoss waterfall, one of the most famous, is a short drive south. You can walk right up to one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Be prepared to get a little wet though!
If you have a week or two in Iceland, you can rent a car and drive the entire Ring Road around the island.
Visit spectacular places such as Diamond Beach or the Strokkur geyser on the Golden Circle. If you’re visiting in the winter months, you can chase the Northern Lights for a glimpse at one of Mother Nature’s beautiful wonders. Iceland’s diverse natural beauty makes it one of the best islands in Europe to visit!

23. Lofoten Islands, Norway

Lofoten Islands, located in Northern Norway, far above the Arctic Circle, and scattered across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, are one of the most stunning islands in Europe.
The rugged mountains rising from the sea, famous Norwegian fjords, white sand beaches, and rich wildlife, make Lofoten a world-class destination and many are putting them on their ‘To See’ list.
Do not forget about the vibrant community and charming fishing villages with red cabins (or ‘rorbu’) built on water.
Villages like A, Reine, or Nusfjord (Unesco heritage site) will steal your heart forever. Road-tripping in Lofoten islands will make a perfect holiday for families seeking an active holiday.
There are many hiking trails suitable for kids keen to explore, Ryten or Kvalvika beach, just to mention two, but there are many more fantastic hikes to be discovered.
And to really appreciate the beauty of Lofoten one needs to see them from above or a high place. Hence pick at least one hike up to the mountain peak and enjoy the view.
Kids can also enjoy horse riding on Icelandic horses or watch seals or otters in the Lofoten Aquarium. Older kids can try fishing or stand-up paddle Boarding and surfing at the famous Unstad beach.

24. Faroe Islands, Denmark – One of the Most Stunning Islands in Europe
A tiny, remote, and incredibly beautiful archipelago settled in the North Atlantic Ocean swaddled between Norway, Scotland, and Iceland, the Faroe Islands is a self-governing region of the Kingdom of Denmark that comprises 18 islands. The islands are linked by beautiful tunnels, bridges, causeways, and ferries.
Home to more sheep (80,000) than humans (50,000), Faroes showcases strikingly wild and raw nature and dramatic landscape. Tórshavn, Saksun, Vágar Island, Nólsoy, Eysturoy, Vestmanna, Mykines, Kalsoy, and Klaksvik are some of the best places to visit on Faroes.

A quaint marine town, its harbors, and streets are lined with maritime and political history. Guernsey is the ultimate destination for a 1-2 day trip, a perfect add-on when visiting England or France.
There are plenty of rural and scenic sights to see, but highly recommended are the coastal views of Guernsey. If staying for multiple days, there are various beaches visitors can travel to within a short amount of driving time.
If only there for a short stay, however, St Peter’s Port is the place to see. A popular sight at St. Peter’s Port for all visitors is Castle Cornet, a castle built right on the coast in the 1800s to defend the city.
There are different types of tours and activities to choose from at Castle Cornet, including historical performances, kids walking trails, and garden tours.
Whether visiting for an afternoon or a couple of nights, Guernsey is one of the hidden gems in Europe you can’t miss.

The Isle of Wight is a diamond-shaped gem on the south coast of England where you can find some of the country’s best weather and an abundance of family-friendly attractions and events.
You can hop on a ferry from either Portsmouth or Southampton and explore the Isle of Wight in a day. But it’s worth spending longer if you can. The Isle of Wight was Queen Victoria’s favorite holiday destination.
Her island hideaway, Osborne House, has the feel of an Italian Renaissance palace. You can explore this and a Swiss-style cottage that was built as a playhouse for her children as well as the gardens that stretch down to a private beach.
In addition to a royal palace, the island has many forts and castles that have defended it and the British Isles over millennia.
More modern attractions include theme parks, zoos, and farms. Prefer to chill on a beach? There are 60 miles of them around the island, including sandy bays, fossil-strewn pebble beaches, and the multi-colored sands of Alum Bay.
The island also hosts its fair share of major events. One of the biggest, the Isle of Wight Festival, has had headliners like the Foo Fighters and The Killers.

Ireland and Northern Ireland are two separate countries that share one Island. Northern Ireland is part of the larger United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland is its own stand-alone country since it became independent from the United Kingdom in the 1920s. Both are wonderful places to visit.
They each have dramatic and beautiful natural beauty, have some incredible historical ruins to explore, and of course, have wonderful pubs to enjoy for delicious beer and fish and chips.
Regardless of your age, you are welcome everywhere. Some of the best destinations to explore in Ireland are Dublin, Kilkenny, Slieve League, the Cliffs of Moher, and the Aran Islands.
Dublin and Kilkenny are fantastic walking cities whereas Slieve League and the Cliffs of Moher encourage you to hike along tall cliffs overlooking the expansive Atlantic Ocean.
The Aran Islands are visible from the Cliffs of Moher and with a short boat trip, allow you to visit communities that still speak Irish and practice a traditional Irish way of life. On Northern Island, you find a much more rugged coastline.
A visit here would not be complete without exploring the stunning Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge and Giants Causeway.
Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is also a must-see destination. It has an extraordinary modern-day history with the ongoing conflict between the Catholics and Protestants, and one of the best museums in the world – Titanic Belfast. This is an extraordinary multi-sensory interactive museum that will delight children and adults alike.
28. Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK

The Isle of Skye is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland and easily one of the best islands in Europe.
Home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, here you can marvel at jagged mountains, serene lochs, cascading waterfalls, rugged coastline, ancient castles and so much more!
There’s so much to do on this breathtaking island that you could spend weeks exploring and still not see it all.
However, even with just two days on the Isle of Skye you can cover the highlights and get a feel for it.
The most iconic feature on Skye is the Old Man of Storr and should not be missed. While you can see Storr from the main road, it’s well worth the short hike to see the enormous rock pinnacles up close.
The hike is a 4.5km loop and almost all uphill on the way there! However, the views are some of the best on the island.
Further north, you’ll discover the mighty Mealt Falls tumbling over Kilt Rock and crashing directly onto the beach below. Viewing this waterfall requires no hike at all with a viewpoint from the car park.
Heading south, the mesmerizing turquoise waters of Fairly Pools and the incredible geography at Fairy Glen feel like scenes from a fairytale book!
For those with an interest in history or architecture, you should include a visit to Neist Point Lighthouse or one of Skye’s castles. However, you are guaranteed to find beauty no matter where you go on this beautiful island.

29. Orkney, Scotland, UK
If you’re looking for a beautiful island to explore, head to Orkney, lying just off the very northern tip of Scotland. Seriously, you can see it from John o’Groats.
The first important thing to know is that ‘Orkney’ actually refers to a group of islands- don’t call them ‘the Orknies’.
Also, if you’re on a Scotland road trip, it’s incredibly easy to take a day trip to Orkney- there are a couple of ferries running several times a day.
You can take one that goes to one side of the islands, then explore in your car, bike, or camper van and take the other one home again.
Alternatively, find some accommodation and stay for a few days to really explore the islands properly.
It’s better to have your own transport on Orkney- makes it easier to see everything and get around.
Some of the highlights of a visit to Orkney include visiting the prehistoric village of Skara Brae (one of the oldest in the world from around 3180BC), marveling at the huge stones in the Ring of Brodgar- in better condition than Stonehenge and you can walk inside the circle.
There’s also the Old Man of Hoy, Scapa Flow (famous for its part in the World Wars and the beautiful 12th-century St Magnus Cathedral.

30. Berneray and North Uist, Scotland, UK

North of mainland Scotland lies the Outer Hebrides and the islands of Berneray and North Uist. It is a little-visited part of Scotland since tourists need to get a ferry from the Isle of Skye.
On arrival, one of the top Outer Hebrides beaches awaits – Berneray West Beach. With crystal clear water and fine white sand, it is easy to see why the beach came third in the 2021 Lonely Planet list of Europe’s 20 Best Beaches.
The beach looks like it could be in Southeast Asia, so much so the Thai tourist board once used a photo of Berneray West Beach in an advert for Thailand by mistake!
Close by is the small village of Berneray. It is a good place to stay with both a youth hostel and the popular Seal View B&B. As the name indicates, this is a great place to see seals. At low tide, they can often be spotted basking on the exposed rocks.
Where to Stay in the Berneray: The island also has many self-catering cottages which is a convenient way to experience the area since there are few restaurants. For some family fun, try wild camping at Clachan Sands, right next to another beautiful beach. Clachan Sands is a good beach for swimming and playing in the shallows if you are bold enough to brave the freezing water.

I know even I added so many to my bucket list. Isn’t it amazing to have so many varied and beautiful places to visit. Isle of Skye is on top of my list too. I had missed visiting it during our trip to Edinburgh. The glimpse of Scottish highlands made me promise to myself for a visit again. Hoping sometime soon.
We were so close to getting to Burano last year just before Covid hit. I’m so sad we missed it. It looks like we’ll definitely need to go to Scotland as well!
