There are an unbelievable number of festivals held annually featuring every type of fruit, vegetable, and meat you can think of. One of these is the Fête du Citron or Lemon Festival. Each year in Menton, a pretty little town in southeastern France renowned for its lemon production, a celebration of all things citron takes place. It all started in 1875 when local hoteliers proposed a carnival parade of oranges and lemons to liven things up in the winter months. It was so popular that even Queen Victoria attended in 1882. But it wasn’t until 1934 that the name “Fête du Citron” was officially adopted in 1934.
Today, the festival is an extravaganza of ornately designed floats of oranges and lemons. Each year, the festival adopts a different theme, ensuring a fresh and engaging experience for repeat visitors. In 2024, the theme will be “The Olympic Games from antiquity to the present day”.
