If you are visiting Copenhagen for the first time, I’d recommend booking accommodation in Indre By without a second thought. And more so, if you are in the city for a short time, like 2 or 3 days.
Indre By (inner city) is the most touristy and action-packed area in Copenhagen. If you want to save time and hassle, Indre By is your best bet, as most famous attractions, restaurants, cafes, and shops are here, making exploration super easy.
And the public transport system is so good that you can quickly get around to areas far from the center.
At the same time, the area is home to most of the city’s best shopping and dining options. It’s a delight to stroll Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets.
Other must-see landmarks in Indre By include the Round Tower and Amalienborg Palace.
Located around Slotsholmen Island in the center of Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Culture District is another remarkable attraction, an assortment of about 19 museums and cultural institutions, as well as many historical buildings and artistic venues. My daughter’s favorite museum, Experimentarium, isn’t far from here. It’s one of the must-visit museums in the city. Whether you choose to stay in Osterbro or not, add this hands-on science and technology museum to your list if you are traveling with kids, whether young minds or teens.
Osterbro also has easy access to Svanemølle Beach, allowing you to enjoy the seaside while staying in the city. While here, you must check out The Lakes (Søerne), a string of rectangular lakes great for walking, jogging, and picnicking.
PS: The Lakes is a scenic link between the beautiful neighborhoods of Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro, and Østerbro, as well as Central Copenhagen. You can check out this central and picturesque feature of the city, no matter where you stay.
And yes, the iconic Little Mermaid Statue is settled here!
You can’t miss strolling Østerbrogade, the main shopping street lined with exclusive boutique shops and a range of hip cafes and restaurants.
We stayed here during our second trip to Copenhagen, and tbh, its upscale residential ambiance and authentic Danish living experience stole our hearts.
It’s not big on cons as such (at least I think so); however, if I must point out one, it’d be the higher cost of accommodations.

Norrebro is often highlighted as one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Copenhagen, and you’ll know why when you explore it. The area is filled with restaurants serving a range of international cuisines, charming coffee shops known for specialty coffee, hip bars sampling craft beers, venues hosting cultural events, and striking street art.
Nørrebrogade, the main shopping street in the area, and Jægersborggade, a relaxed and hip street, are great for strolling.
The area is also home to beautiful outdoor spaces such as Assistens Cemetery (a huge park and the resting place of famous Danes like Hans Christian Andersen).
My favorite attraction in Norrebro is Superkilen, a unique and innovative public park that has become a symbol of multiculturalism. Here, you’ll find a collection of objects from around the world representing the diverse ethnicities (about 60) living in Norrebro.
Now the cons: the area is slightly removed from the city center (though still accessible by public transport). Its edgier vibe may not be appealing to those looking for a quieter, more traditional feel.

Another positive point is that it’s within walking distance of the city center. So, getting around is also manageable while staying here.
Talking about the drawbacks, I noticed that parts of Vesterbro, such as Istedgade, still retain traces of its history as a Red Light District and might feel less polished. Besides, it gets noisy and loud, especially on weekends, so it’s not for those seeking a peaceful stay or who aren’t interested in nightlife.
