It is one of the darkest times of the year in Tallinn when the market takes place but you will find the city lit up by the market’s massive Christmas tree and festive lights. All ages will enjoy a visit to the Tallinn Christmas Market. There are fun children and entertainment program which includes musical performances by Santa and his elves. At Santa’s hut, children can claim a treat from Santa for reciting rhythms and holiday songs. It is a joy to wander through the aisles of stalls and vendors which sell locally made handicrafts, as well as traditional Estonia dishes and drinks such as sausage and sauerkraut and spiced mulled wine.

What to Buy: Christmas decorations and hand-made presents, such as candles or soap. Viennese snow globes are also very popular, as well as all the sweets and pastries you can eat. Wooden toys are also quite popular!
Where to Eat: There’s plenty to buy on the spot, like snacks and sweets. If you are looking for a hearty meal, Cafe Einstein nearby offers plenty of alternatives, and it is a favorite spot with students. If you walk for 10 minutes, we recommend eating at Cafe Diglas at Schottengasse no.2, they have amazing Austrian cuisine, are child-friendly, and are much less crowded than other places.
What’s Special about it: The Christmas Market in Vienna is more of a Christmas village, and although at points it gets crowded, it is a must for locals and visitors alike. 150 traditional booths offer everything from gifts, decorations, handicrafts, culinary treats, and warm drinks. Little visitors can enjoy the same treatment as adults, as there is the famous children’s punch being offered everywhere! Wonderful light installations adorn the trees in the park that surrounds the market, and a stroll here will reward children with treasures such as carousels, Ferris wheels, and a raindeers’ train. An ice skating rink welcomes them on the other side of the park and in between they can enjoy all the Christmas treats on offer at the selling booths.

Kid-friendly Holiday Attractions: Definitely the ice skating rink! It’s stunning and right in the center of the old town. There’s a sing-along choir every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are the traditional wind musical performances.
What to Buy: So many cute little trinkets and ornaments. I bought an ornament that has the city painted on it. For your kids, they have lots of cute little toys.
Where to Eat: Any of the food stalls are great. Definitely buy kletzenbrot! It’s Austrian fruit bread and is so tasty! Also, giant pretzels are very good too.
What’s Special about it: I spent a December wandering around the various Christmas markets in Europe, and I must say, I absolutely fell in love with the Christmas market in Salzburg, Austria. Yes, that’s right, Salzburg is known as the filming location for The Sound of Music and the birthplace of Mozart. It really is the best Christmas market. And it’s the best Christmas market for kids! I loved how many families I saw while here. The ice skating rink really adds to the great family vibe. Salzburg is such a magical city already that you really cannot go wrong with spending the Christmas season here. Also as an added tip, it’s one of the oldest Christmas markets. It dates all the way back to the late 15th century! So please go, and enjoy the great lights and holiday cheer at the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt! This is for sure one of the best things to do in Salzburg in winter.

Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is also the perfect place for the whole family to try German delicacies that have now become popular around the globe. Where to Eat: Anywhere and everywhere! There are so many choices.
What’s Special about it: If you want a Christmas market for kids, Munich is a great choice. Not only is it one of the biggest Christmas markets in Europe, but it’s also very child friendly and there are loads to do. There are 7 different markets across the city- each with its own fun things to do. The main market is in the central square, with a huge selection of stalls selling gifts, decorations, sweets, and souvenirs. You kids will be entranced by the enormous Christmas tree which dominates the square. There’s also a traditional market a few streets away, where the stalls and gifts are made as they were many years ago- wooden toys, leather bags, and carvings are widely sold here and they’re all beautiful. You’ll also see people wandering around in the traditional Munich dress, which is fun to watch- especially for kids. Lastly, one of the smaller markets near the train stop is designed for kids- there are rides and fairground games for them to enjoy.

Where to Eat: The best place to pick up a bite to eat in the evening is the many stalls in the main market. You’ll find some of the best foods including Westphalian grilled ham and pancakes.
What’s Special about it: The Dortmund Christmas market really is something special. Not only are there countless stalls lining seemingly every street, but there are live bands, endless places to pick up something to eat, children’s rides, and the main highlight, the biggest Christmas Tree in the world. Over 300 stalls are packed around this giant tree that towers 45 meters over the main square. The secret is, that it is not actually one tree, it is made up of 1,700 individual trees and over 13,000 lights! In addition to the main market, in the nearby Westfalenpark, there is an incredible annual light show, where the trees and pathways are adorned with twinkling, colored fairy lights, beams, spotlights, and more, creating a magical atmosphere.
Where to Stay: There are some really nice hotels located right in the town center which give you easy access to the markets. Located in a charming neighborhood, Leonardo Hotel is beautiful, clean, family-friendly, close to the city center, and comes at such a reasonable price – it’s a steal deal!

Where to Eat: About 20 percent of the 170 stalls sell food and drink, so there are plenty of options to choose from. Most serve traditional German dishes such as Käsespätzle, but you can also find Moroccan, Indian, and other cuisines. The food at these international stalls is generally the best option for vegetarian and vegan visitors.
What’s Special about it: With its spectacular setting right on beautiful Lake Constance, the Konstanz Christmas market (Weihnachsmarkt am See) has a very different feel from the many other markets around the region. Lake Constance is most often though, of as a summer destination, but it’s magical under Christmas lights too! Not only do the market stalls stretch out along the harbor, but there’s even a “Christmas Ship” moored in the harbor! Kids will have a blast exploring the ship, and parents will appreciate the breathtaking panoramic views of the lake from the ice bar on board. This deservedly popular market attracts visitors not only from within Germany but also from nearby Switzerland and Austria, so it’s worth coming on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

What’s Special about it: Dresden actually has 5 different Christmas Markets, but the famous one is the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. It is open from the end of November until Christmas Eve every year. The Striezelmarkt is the oldest Christmas market in Germany and dates back to the 15th century. It is one of the most traditional Christmas Markets in Europe. The Striezelmarkt is especially fun for the smaller guests. There are many kid-friendly activities and events. On December 7th, they can see the world-record-breaking Christmas Stollen – a huge loaf of sweet bread – that is paraded through the city. Another fun place for kids is the Children’s Discovery Zone, where kids can participate in a Christmas cookie bakery, visit a Christmas Eve’s house, or explore an enchanted forest. In the afternoon, Santa opens the day’s Advent calendar and afterward, the kids can enjoy a fairytale show at the puppet theater (in German).

The award-winning Christmas celebrations return this year with no less than 6 different Christmas markets spread around the illuminated lanes and attractive plazas of the old town. Local specialties include gourmet cakes, gingerbread, cheese, meats, honey, and nougat. Whether staying in town or just passing through (as we were, en route to Switzerland with our 8-week-old daughter for her first family ski trip), the Christmas markets of Colmar present a charming experience for all the family.

What’s Special about it: The Tuileries Market (La Magie de Noël) is one of the best Christmas markets in Paris and a great Christmas Market to visit with kids. It is located in central Paris, between the Louvre Museum and Place Concorde and it is very easy to reach by metro (line 1, metro station Tuileries). The market has typical wooden stalls with handicrafts and all kinds of sweets and also a small funfair with a good variety of rides for children and an ice rink. There are also some stalls on-site with food and drinks and Santa Claus is always hanging around the market for a selfie with your kids.

Where to Eat: Inside the Valkenburg Caves you can find a few places to have a bite, from sweet waffles to burgers and everything in between. If you fancy trying more options you can always book the “Culinary route”, a nice walk through the Christmas Town in which you can get to know local restaurants and their dishes.
What’s Special about it: The most incredible thing about the Valkenburg Christmas Market is the location. A market inside a cave is not something you could find easily. The decoration, live music, and festive environment can make this place unforgettable. It’s a special trip for kids because they get to see a different kind of market, with Santa greeting you at the entry or saying goodbye at the end of the market. Also, outside the caves, on Wednesday and Saturday at 19:30 you can find the Christmas Fairytales Parade, a perfect way to end your day in Valkenburg.
Where to Stay: There’s not much to see in Valkenburg besides the market. You can stay in Amsterdam or in Maastricht and go to Valkenburg by train to spend the day.
Expert Tip: There are two caves, the municipal one, and the velvet, they’re quite similar so no need to go to both. If you want to visit both caves, there’s a combi-ticket you can get online or in place.

What’s Special about it: Christmas is perhaps the most beautiful time of the year, especially for our youngest. We, adults, are also not immune to all those decorations, lights, all delicious food. All of these can only be found in one place at beautiful Christmas fairs. Some of the most beautiful fairs in Europe are located in the capital of Hungary, Budapest. One of the most famous fairs in Budapest is the Christmas Market at Vörösmarty Square. It is located on a plateau in front of the Gerbeaud Coffee House. Many stands are set up around the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. With so many lamps and decorations, it is impossible not to feel that warmth around the heart. The diverse program on the stages covers all musical directions, so you can hear jazz, folk, soul, blues, and world music in general. The programs start on weekdays at 5 pm and last until 8 pm, and on weekends from 4 pm to 8 pm. Admission to all activities is free.

Where to Eat: The market on Namesti Svoboda (Freedom Square) has around thirty food stalls.
What’s Special about it: The Brno Christmas Market is great for kids as it’s relatively small and easy to see in a few hours. The main market is on Namesti Svoboda – Freedom Square – one of the city’s main hubs, and there’s another smaller Market less than 100 meters away on Dominikanske Namesti (Dominican Square). This smaller Market is more intimate and picturesque than the larger one, in a beautiful setting beneath the Dominican Church of St Michael and the New Town Hall. It’s home to an amazing life-size carved wooden Nativity scene, with around 50 figures from the Holy Family to the Three Wise Men to shepherds and farm animals. Brno’s Christmas Ice Rink is a short walk from Namesti Svoboda, in a gorgeous setting outside St Thomas’ Church and the impressive Moravian Gallery.
Where to Stay: Hotel Grandezza, overlooking one of the most beautiful squares in Brno.
Expert Tip: Don’t miss the ice rink outside the Moravian Gallery, 300 meters away from the Main Market on Namesti Svoboda.

What’s special about it: What better way to end the year with a celebration of love and togetherness? Markets are lit. Likewise amongst all the famous markets, let’s set our eyes on the Feria De Belen, situated in Seville, which is known for its unique and authentic nativity scene. The market is an organization belonging to the Association of Merchants of Christmas Cradles of Seville. They celebrate Christmas magnanimously, where young and old enjoy the company and drink wine, sherry, and beer. The market is open 7 days a week. Seville’s vibrancy for Christmas results in a large party when old and young meet and join enormous group festivals to mingle and celebrate. The market is lit like any other market, selling Christmas accessories and some authentic decor, but what adds a cherry on the cake are the 3 hours of live singing performance by the Madrid San Ildefonso School students.
Where to Stay: Wondering where to stay in Seville? There are plenty of hotels and Boutique hotels to choose from, but Casa del Poeta or Hotel Gravina 51, would be the ideal accommodation.
Expert Tip: Make it a point to attend one of the Christmas parades in Seville.

Bucharest Christmas Market, Romania

What to Buy: Beautiful handicrafts, traditional clothing items, handmade toys, glittery Christmas decorations, baked products, and local specialties.
Where to Eat: Come to Bucharest Christmas Market on an empty stomach and try a local dish called ‘sarmale’ with polenta, sausages with pickles, cozonac, and a sweet bread specialty from Transylvania, Kürtőskalács.
What’s special about it: Bucharest’s biggest Christmas fair, the market offers more than 100 cottages with lots of gifts to buy and food to sample, a huge Christmas tree all lit up, and loads of fun activities and attractions for kids.
Where to stay: You can stay at Matisse Bucharest Old Town to make the most of your stay in Bucharest.

Other activities for children also include carousel rides at Rabbit Land, as well as a fairytale treasure hunt at the medieval village, and of course, Santa’s workshop is open to guests.
What to Buy: Swedish homewares in the modern Christmas Market and Swedish gingerbread in the traditional Christmas Market.
Where to Eat: Pre-book the traditional Swedish Christmas buffet dinner at Stjärnornas Krog restaurant.
What’s special about it: Liseberg Amusement Park is transformed into a winter wonderland and as Sweden’s largest Christmas Market, there are plenty of things to do with the family. With Innumerable (5 million, to be precise) twinkling Christmas lights, about 1000 Christmas trees, 80+ stalls, a variety of thrilling winter rides, and Swedish delicacies to taste – it has to be one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

Stick Man, Snow Pal, and Little Red are also some successful shows. However these could change, so always check the Edinburgh Christmas Website for updated shows.

For younger kids, there’s an exclusive Santa Land with a carousel, Christmas tree maze, Santa train, Elves workshop, and Santa’s Grotto. There is so much to do in Edinburg with kids making it one of the best cities to visit in the UK.

Where to Eat: Grabbing food in the market is always recommended, however, if you’re looking for a sit-down meal, you may want to stop by the local pub and try some Haggis!
What’s special about it: Over a 10-week span, the city of Perth celebrates all things winter, starting with Christmas, light switch on the party in November, and officially ending in February with the Chinese New Year finale. The bulk of the events take place directly around Christmas with the light switch on the party as the main event which features at least 3 music stages, markets, fair rides, a chocolate and gin market, a grotto for Santa, and more. Other events that take place over the festival period are a Santa Run, a Christmas Lantern Parade, a St. Andrews Day Celebration, and a Christmas Tree Trail.
Where to Stay: The Lovat Hotel is a short walk to both the city center and train station, providing access to everything in Perth as well as opportunities to take day trips to other cities. It serves a continental breakfast and has a children’s playroom.
Expert Tip: The festival in Perth starts just after Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th ) so you may be able to catch a glimpse of Bonfire Night in Edinburgh before heading over to Perth for the Lights Switch on Party if you time your visit correctly. It’s only about a 90-minute train ride between the two cities.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market, UK

Kid-friendly Holiday Activities: The Birmingham Christmas Market stretches from Victoria Square all down New Street. This makes it ideal for kids as it is easy to escape the crowds and stay away from busier areas. There is a carousel and lots of treats that make this market ideal for kids. Most of the beer and Glühwein are sold in the Square so if you want to stay away from the rowdier area then stick to the stalls on New Street.
What to Buy: Many of the vendors have come from Frankfurt thanks to the ongoing partnership between the 2 cities. If you are looking for some authentic German ornaments but can’t make it to Germany, you will be able to find lots here!
Where to Eat: As with the other vendors, many of the food stands are also from Germany! My personal favorites were the crepes and the bratwurst. Of course, you can’t visit the Christmas Market without having some Glühwein and taking home a keepsake mug as well! For the kids, they have apple cider or a hot alcohol-free punch!
What’s special about it: Birmingham comes alive every winter with the arrival of Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market.
It’s a clear sign that Christmas is just around the corner. In fact, it is actually the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany or Austria. Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market offers a large range of traditional German goods and foods. No matter your taste, everyone will find something they like! Because it covers the whole of Victoria Square and New Street it is also a great place to meet up with family and friends. In the evening there is even live music in the Square. Whilst you’re here you can even get your Christmas shopping done with the variety of vendors available. I loved the selection of German chocolate and Lebkuchen – yum!
Where to Stay: For being the second-largest city in England, the city center of Birmingham is quite condensed and walkable in comparison to London! Any hotel around New Street will be centrally located and easy to access the market. We stayed at the Ibis Styles Birmingham Centre, which was conveniently located between Victoria Square and Centenary Square. Breakfast was included and it was very affordable for the location and size!
Expert Tip: Make sure you bring cash as not all vendors accept cards. The market is also busiest on weekend evenings and any days closest to Christmas. If you want to take your kids when it is quieter, make sure you visit during the week or earlier in December.

The ice skating rink is also a perfect family stop and even has penguin training aids available to help keep inexperienced skaters from falling. Santa Land is great for the little ones where they can meet Santa Claus and receive a free gift if they’ve been good. The food trucks sprinkled throughout the market offer a wide variety of cuisines that’ll please even the pickiest of eaters. An often-seen dessert option is a chocolate-dipped marshmallow and strawberry kabobs (or cups for those messy eaters). Whether you have young children or teenagers, there’s something for everyone. With how expansive Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is, the whole family could find ways to have fun for an entire day (or even two!).

Where to Eat: Children will love a warming hot chocolate in Thor’s Tipi, a specially erected tipi filled with sheepskin-covered benches around an open fire. Plus, the market is beautifully illuminated at night. For dinner with a great view of York Minster try a pizza at The Market Cat.
What’s Special About it: The York St. Nicholas Fair in York, northern England is an award-winning market open for six weeks from the middle of November until Christmas Eve. The market is easy to visit with kids as the 100+ stalls are in a compact, pedestrianized area of the city center. Carol singers and buskers entertain festive shoppers and there are traditional fairground rides such as a carousel and a helter-skelter for the kids.
Where to Stay: Families can stay in family rooms at Travelodge, Premier Inn, or Safestay, all of which are within walking distance of the Christmas market.
Expert Tip: Families visiting York at Christmas should not miss the chance to attend a traditional pantomime at one of the city’s three theatres.
Belfast Continental Christmas Market, Northern Ireland

Kid-friendly Activities: Most of the kid-friendly activities are found on the left side of Belfast City Hall when arriving from the front gates, just look for the red and white Helter Skelter, and all the fun stuff surrounding it. This includes a snow globe photo-op, a vintage Christmas carousel, and, of course, Santa’s Grotto, to meet the man himself. Otherwise, there’s a lot to find in and around the market including lots of snacks and sweetie stalls including all sorts of chocolate stalls, donuts, churros, and a great eating activity for kids is the marshmallow toasting station. For hot food, there’s the annual hog roast, and for something different the “Meats of the World” Burger van offers lots of unlikely options including ostrich and kangaroo burgers.

What’s Special About it: The award-winning Belfast Christmas Market is hosted on the grounds of Belfast City Hall so, it is also possible to do a tour of the interior, which has some free-to-visit galleries for visitors and tourists. There are over 100 chalets that sell international as well as local products. Belfast is small and, it is easy to walk to the market from any city center hotel. However, a recommended option would have to be the Europa Hotel found directly next to the main train/bus stations of Belfast city center.
