Kalpitiya Beach

If you love watching dolphins and whales playing in their natural habitat, Kalpitiya is the place! The beach is also famous among kite surfers and watersport enthusiasts.

From snorkeling, scuba diving, boat rides, and canoe excursions across the Kalpitiya Lagoon (Puttalam Lagoon), kite-surfing to 4X4 rides along the beach, and whale and dolphin watching, Kalpitiya has so much in store for its visitors.

Visiting the Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary, a pristine and rich coral reef system just offshore from the Kalpitiya peninsula, is a great experience.

Make sure to visit Wilpattu National Park, one of the oldest and largest National Parks in Sri Lanka, just about 120 km from Kalpitiya. You can even visit the shorefront of the national park via a boat ride through the Kalpitiya Lagoon. It’s famous for its distinctive willow (natural lakes) and leopard population.

Another fascinating place close to Kalpitiya Beach is the Puttalam Salt Pans, with the wide expanses of white salt dunes. Kids love to spot wild burros or donkeys wandering in Puttalam.

Unawatuna

One of the most sought-after and famous beaches in Sri Lanka, Unawatuna is a beautiful golden sandy beach enveloped by swaying palm trees and lined with dozens of bars and restaurants.

You can rent one of the many sunbeds laid out on the beach and enjoy bathing in the sun while admiring the views across the ocean.

The beach is thronged with tourists and is quite popular among locals, too. It’s a nice, easy hike up to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, located on the west end of the beach, which affords views over Unawatuna.

One of the lesser-known and secluded beaches in Sri Lanka, Jungle Beach is a little hard to reach. You can walk or trek through a forest or take a boat trip to reach here.

Located on Jungle Beach Road, you can’t miss Rumassala Sanctuary and Rumassala Hill.

Dalawella Beach

Well-known for its scenic views, natural seawater swimming pools, and one of the most talked-about attractions in Sri Lanka – the coconut palm tree rope swing, Dalawella is among the main attractions in Unawatuna.

Despite being famous, Dalawella is not as crowded as other popular beaches in Sri Lanka. There are some stretches where you can have it all to yourself.

Tangalle, aka Tangalla, is a tranquil and unspoiled stretch of white sand with shimmering, deep turquoise waters surrounded by palm and mangrove trees and lined by a handful of resorts.

Mirissa Beach

Known for its Parrot Rock, Mirissa Beach is super famous for a reason, of course. It, invariably, finds a place on any traveler’s Sri Lanka itinerary.

The beach is clean and beautiful. There are umpteen opportunities for watersport enthusiasts.

The right and left side of the bay is divided by a Parrot Rock Bridge. Walk through the water to climb the rock for some great views.

Apart from being a snorkeling and surfing hotspot, Mirissa is well-known for whale watching. In fact, whale-watching is the main reason why families with kids visit Mirissa. The chances of spotting the whales are bright from October to May.

You can’t miss a sunset from Coconut Tree Hill, a short walk away from Mirissa Beach. You can even hire a tuk-tuk along Matara Road to reach here.

Secret Beach

Secret Beach, as the name signifies, is a not-so-secret beach in Sri Lanka. Once, it was. Lately, the beach has gained popularity among seasoned travelers, but tourists have yet to reach here. So, you can enjoy the relaxed and laid-back vibes.

You can walk from Mirissa Beach, rent a bike, or hire a tuk-tuk to reach here. The beach is easy to find with the help of Google Maps.

This V-shaped, narrow, rocky beach has Blue Lagoon, a shallow rock pool, just opposite the Secret Beach bar, which is perfect for swimming with kids. You can lie down in a hammock or a rented daybed to admire the views.

A bit further is a point where the forest meets the ocean and palms hang low, Palm Cove, where you can snorkel or just spend some time in serenity.

Sunrise and Sunset are the best times to visit Secret Beach.

If you are planning to catch your first wave, Weligama is the place!

Negombo

Negombo is more often than not the first or last stop in the Sri Lanka itinerary owing to its proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport.

We spent our last day in Negombo while waiting for our late-night flight to Delhi.

Negombo Beach is not as popular and beautiful as Mirissa, Unawatuna, or Dalawella. Still, it is a decent and clean beach to spend some lovely time on before you bid goodbye to beautiful Sri Lanka.

Kalutara

With a long stretch of golden sand starting from Waskaduwa to Payagala, sundered by Kalu River Estuary, Kalutara is one of the most tranquil and beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka.

Elephant Rock is a beautiful vantage point that affords panoramic beach views. If you’ve time, watch the gorgeous sunset from here.

Muhudu Maha Vihara (5 km) and Kudumbigala Monastery (30 km) are worth a trip from Arugam Bay.
