With so many family-friendly things to see and do, spending a day in Thekkady with kids can be a truly memorable experience. Here’s how your day looks like:
7:30 am: Explore Periyar National Park
Kick off your journey in Thekkady with a visit to the renowned Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Famed for its array of wildlife, including elephants and tigers, it’s one of the most prominent national parks in India.
A boat cruise on the lake within the sanctuary is the ideal way to encounter its diverse animal life. These cruises run several times a day, with schedules that include morning and afternoon times starting as early as 7:30 am. While spotting tigers is uncommon, you’re very likely to observe elephants, bison, and sambar deer in their natural habitat.
It’s a good idea to start as early as possible, preferably by the first boat cruise, to maximize wildlife sighting opportunities. A half-day exploration, including a boat cruise and a walk or hike, should give you a fulfilling experience before you head for breakfast.
Fun Fact: Interestingly, the name ‘Thekkady’ comes from the Malayalam word ‘thekku’, which refers to the teak trees found in the region. This points to the area’s rich teak forests that are a significant part of its natural landscape.

Visiting a spice plantation farm in Thekkady is an excellent activity for families. During our family trip, we explored the Greenpark Spice Farm, and it was an eye-opening experience.
The farm owner’s passion for sustainable farming was evident and inspiring. Walking through the plantation, it was fascinating to see the actual plants of everyday spices like green cardamom, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, bay leaf, ginger, turmeric, and coffee. I was particularly intrigued by the cardamom plants, where the fruits grow intriguingly at the base, and how they harvest them selectively.
One unique discovery was the miraculous banana plant, with its seed-containing flower growing unusually at the top. Apart from spices, the farm is a treasure trove of various fruits, vegetables, and herbs, each with its story and home remedy.
Another interesting fact we learned is Kerala’s significant role in vanilla cultivation, adding another layer to its spice legacy.
For those looking for a more immersive experience, Greenpark Farm has treehouses, popular among honeymooners, offering a unique stay amidst nature. The entry fee was quite modest at INR 100 per adult, and the kids were welcomed free of charge.
Other plantations like Abraham’s Spice Garden and Spice Walk are also worth visiting. Most of these places have their own stores where you can buy fresh, authentic spices to take home.
12 pm: Explore Tea Plantations
While Munnar is often the go-to destination for tea plantations in Kerala, Thekkady also boasts its own stunning terraced tea hills that are a sight to behold.

Pattumalay Tea Factory is notable for still using the traditional orthodox method of tea manufacturing. During your visit, you can learn about the intricate nuances of tea production and sample various types of tea, gaining a deeper appreciation for your favorite beverage.
Another spot for tea enthusiasts is the Connemara Tea Factory located in Vandiperiyar, which also provides insightful tours.

As for pricing, here’s a general idea: black pepper can range from INR 400-500 per kg, cloves from INR 800-1000 per kg, green cardamom from INR 1500-1800, and cinnamon sticks around INR 400-500 per kg. Additionally, there are packs containing small quantities of multiple spices, perfect for gifting.
